The art of the hand written thank you note is not dead, although the practice of it may be under the weather. The feeling of having written one is always one of pride and accomplishment. And certainly, the feeling of receiving one is always a particular joy.
As children we learned to say please and thank you and it’s a practice that never goes out of style. And it’s truly an art to expand the sentiment in writing. Beyond the words you choose to express your gratitude for something, be it a gesture or a gift, you have the pleasure of choosing what to write it on and with what writing implement. You are setting the stage and the tone. The first choice is the stationary or card that you will use. The styles run the gamut from formal to funky, from serious to silly, from mild to wild. Choosing the right piece of paper or the perfect card will also inform your sentiment.
Then there’s the pen or pencil to achieve the quality and size of the words produced and the myriad colors in which they can be written. The very fact that you’ve thought about so much before you’ve even set pen to paper is evidence of your thoughtfulness.
Now for the words. With words from your heart, you can’t go wrong.
Dear Aunt Betty and Uncle Bob,
I can’t think of anything I’d rather do than have dinner in your lovely and inviting home and to spend time with two of my favorite people. It was lovely! I couldn’t help noticing how sparkling clean all your linens were and how, come to think of it, your clothes were too. What is your secret? Do tell!
Your loving niece,
Charlotte
